Stainless steel 316TI / AISI 316TI / 1.4571
Stainless steel 316TI grade has virtually the same properties as stainless steel 316, except with the addition of titanium. The addition of titanium is intended to decrease the risk of intercrystalline corrosion at temperatures between 425 and 815 degrees Celsius.
What is intercrystalline corrosion? – When austenitic stainless steel products are subjected to prolonged exposure at temperatures between 425 and 815 degrees Celsius, the carbon that is mixed into the stainless steel causes the intercrystalline corrosion to decrease. Stainless steel in this state is referred to as being ‘sensitive’. Its grain boundaries become sensitive to attacks during future exposure to corrosive environments. This type of corrosion is called intercrystalline corrosion.
The presence of titanium in the 1.4571 alloy improves its mechanical strength. However, the processability of 1.4571 can also be a problem, because the titanium carbonitride particles can cause a higher degree of wear in the equipment.
316TI stainless steel, also known as AISI 316TI, is used in equipment for the foodstuffs industry and the pharmaceutical, fibre, paper and textile industries.
